About this split PDF tool

Splitting a PDF means taking one document apart. This page shows a thumbnail of every page in the file you open, lets you tick the pages you actually need, and builds either one new PDF containing just that selection or a separate PDF for every single page.

It is the tool to reach for when a 40-page bank statement contains the three pages an agency asked for, when a scanned booklet needs to become individual handouts, or when one page of a contract has to be sent on its own without exposing the rest.

Situations that call for splitting

  • Sending proof without oversharing

A bank statement proves one payment but also shows every other transaction of the month. Extracting the single relevant page is the difference between answering a request and handing over your finances.

  • Breaking up a long scan

A stack fed through a scanner in one pass becomes a single PDF. Splitting it page by page turns that pile back into separate receipts, certificates or forms you can name and file.

  • Preparing handouts or excerpts

Teachers and trainers often need chapter four of a workbook rather than the whole thing, and a subset keeps the file small enough to attach.

  • Getting under an upload limit

Dropping the pages a portal does not need is usually faster and lossless compared with compressing a document until it degrades.

How to split a PDF

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Choose a file or drop it onto the upload area. Page previews are rendered on your device so you can see exactly what each page contains before deciding.

  2. 2

    Select the pages you need

Click page thumbnails to select them, or use Select All and Clear Selection. Extract the selection as one document, or split every page into its own file.

  3. 3

    Download the result

Save the extracted PDF directly, or download all generated files together in a single ZIP archive when you split a document page by page.

Common reasons to separate PDF pages

Send only what is asked for

Share the specific pages a landlord, school or employer requested instead of forwarding a whole statement or report.

Trim files before uploading

Removing unneeded pages is often the quickest way to bring a document under a portal's size limit.

Break a bundle into parts

Turn a scanned stack of documents into separate, properly named files for invoices, receipts or certificates.

See before you split

Page thumbnails mean you are choosing from what the pages look like, not guessing from page numbers.

Common use cases

  • Extract evidence from a statement

Keep only the pages requested by a landlord, lender or agency rather than disclosing an entire financial document.

  • Separate a scanned contract

Turn a long scan into individual page files when different people need different sections.

  • Create a chapter handout

Select a run of pages from a workbook or report and save them together as a smaller reading packet.

  • Remove bulky appendices

Extract the useful pages into a new PDF without re-encoding them, which reduces size without lowering quality.

Practical examples

  • Sending only the signature page

A 30-page agreement is signed, but the other party only needs the executed page. Select that page alone and extract it — the rest of the contract never leaves your machine, and the recipient gets a file they can read in seconds.

  • One bank statement out of a yearly export

A landlord asks for three recent months from a file containing twelve. Tick those pages and extract them together into a single PDF, rather than sending a year of transactions.

  • Separating documents scanned in one pass

A passport page, a utility bill and a payslip were scanned as one three-page file. Splitting every page into its own document lets each be uploaded to the field that asks for it.

  • Making a file small without compressing it

A 40 MB report is mostly appendices. Extracting the ten pages that are actually required drops the size dramatically and, unlike compression, costs nothing in quality — the kept pages are copied untouched.

Your document stays on your device

Both the page previews and the split files are produced in your browser. The PDF is read into memory locally, pages are rendered and extracted there, and each result is passed to your browser's download function.

Nothing is transmitted to a server, which matters when the document you are separating contains financial records, medical letters or personal identification.

How the split is performed

Before splitting

The file is opened locally and each page is drawn onto a small canvas in the page so you get a visual index. Rendering previews is a display step — it does not modify or send the document.

During splitting

Your selected page numbers are used to copy those pages into one or more new documents in memory. When you split every page, the resulting files are collected and zipped inside the browser as well.

After splitting

Each result is offered as a download and then discarded from memory on reload. The source PDF on your device is never rewritten, so you can split it again differently as often as you like.

Working on phones and computers

Page previews are the most demanding part of this tool, so it renders thumbnails for the first 60 pages. That keeps a long document scrollable on a mid-range phone instead of freezing while hundreds of pages draw.

On a small screen the thumbnails reflow into a narrower grid and selection is a single tap; on a laptop the wider grid makes it quicker to scan for the page you want. Both paths produce identical files.

Downloading a ZIP works in mobile browsers, but iOS in particular saves it to the Files app rather than opening it. If you would rather avoid archives on a phone, extract your selection as one PDF instead of splitting every page.

Tips for best results

  • Use thumbnails, not guesses

Scan the preview grid before selecting; printed page numbers can differ from the PDF's actual page positions.

  • Choose the right output

Extract Selected creates one PDF, while Split Every Page creates separate files collected in a ZIP.

  • Stay within the preview range

The interface displays the first 60 pages. Split a longer source into sections first if the pages you need fall later.

  • Keep private pages unselected

Review the selection count before downloading so unrelated statements or identity pages are not included.

Split PDF questions

Can I extract non-consecutive pages?

Yes. Select any combination of pages — for example 2, 5 and 9 — and they are extracted into one new PDF in page order.

How large a file can I split?

Files up to 100 MB are accepted, and previews are generated for the first 60 pages so the page grid stays responsive on phones.

Does splitting change the original PDF?

No. The file on your device is only read. Every extracted page is written into a new document.

What does Download All produce?

When a document is split into separate pages, all of the resulting PDFs are packed into one ZIP file so you do not have to save them one by one.

I split too much — can I put pages back together?

Yes. Send the extracted files through the merge tool to recombine them in whatever order you like.

Is splitting a PDF free?

Yes. Extracting pages and downloading the result does not require payment or a subscription.

Do I need to sign up?

No account or email address is required.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Previews, page copying and ZIP creation all happen in your browser on your device.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap thumbnails to select pages. Large preview grids are usually quicker to review on a laptop.

Which file formats are supported?

The input must be a PDF. The output is a PDF for an extraction or a ZIP containing PDFs when every page is split.

Will there be a watermark?

No. Extracted pages are copied without adding logos, labels or watermarks.

What happens after I close the page?

The source and generated files are released from browser memory. Files already saved to downloads stay on your device.
